Smudging – a Slab Building Technique

WHAT IS SMUDGING?

I have been working on a method of rolling out clay, cutting it into sections or strips and then rolling them back together. Using the mechanical nature of the rollers, the way and direction it squeezes the clay as it is pressed through the rollers, I can manipulate the surface. I call this process smudging.  Watch how the clay is rolled, cut, reassembled, smudged back together and then formed into a bowl shape with the use of a wooden mold.

John Weaver Painting Post #1

BELT OF VENUS ON LAKE PONCA

A look back at my childhood fishing hole.

Oklahoma’s big sky is often full of atmospherics. The calm on the water belies the drama at higher altitude.

This piece is a metaphor for inner stillness in a tumultuous time.
